The Nottinghamshire village of Widmerpool lies some 10 miles south east of Nottingham and just 7 miles from Loughborough. The most distinguished building in the village is Widmerpool Hall which was built in 1872, but in a bygone age it was the manor which was taken over by Henricus de Diddisworth in 1216. The village held its own race meeting on Tuesday 4th February 1840, the card consisting of a 3 mile Match, 100 guineas a side, between Captain King and Captain Hovenden of the 5th Dragoon Guards. The course was flagged out over 3 miles on the Melton Road, starting in a field near Hickling, round to Parson’s Gorse, alongside the Nottingham To Melton turnpike road and on to a finish at the windmill at Broughton Sulney. The event was won by Captain King aboard Wallace. There is no evidence of further races taking place in the village. |
